Glossary

Aerial Parts

A very general term for the plant parts which are found above ground; it does not differentiate between flower, stalk, stem and leaves in terms of where the extract is coming from.

Broad Spectrum CBD

Is refined through winterization, distillation and chromatography to completely remove THC. Once THC has been removed, the extract is only one step away from a CBD isolate. This type of extract contains 80-90% CBD. At this stage, CBD concentrations are very high, and the presence of both the total number as well as concentration of the other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids has been substantially reduced.

Cannabinoids

A diverse group of compounds that can be produced by plants, produced by humans and animals, or synthesized in a lab.

Cannabidiol (CBD)

A non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid, and has some of the most powerful health benefits of the plant.

Certificate of Analysis

A document, ideally from an accredited, third party laboratory that presents a breakdown of all the components of a CBD oil or product (CBD, terpenes, flavonoids, metals, pesticides, etc.).

Chromatography

Extraction process that removes all of the residual THC.

CO2 Extraction

Extraction process by which super-cooled carbon dioxide is pushed through hemp matter to remove all but cannabinoids, terpenes & trichomes.

Decarboxilation

Extraction process that converts CBDA to CBD through heating.

Distillate

Winterized and further refined through the distillation process to remove additional cannabinoids and terpenes, as well as chlorophyll and flavonoids to yield a highly concentrated and transparent oil comprised of 70-80% CBD, and will have a reduced level of cannabinoids and terpenes.

Distillation

Extraction process that concentrates the CBD & reduces some of the cannabinoids & terpenes.

Endocannabinoid System

A master regulatory system which maintains homeostasis and balance of various other systems throughout the whole human body.

Entourage Effect

An outcome of amplified benefits facilitated by the presence of a complete profile of cannabinoids and terpenes.

Extraction

The process from which the CBD oil is removed from the plant.

Flavonoid

Plant compounds (phytonutrients) containing pigments & exhibiting antioxidant effects.

Full Spectrum CBD

Oil which retains all compounds & respective ratios & no more than .3% THC.

Hemp Extract

A very general term that does not give any information on what is contained in the extract. Misleading to consumers.

Hemp Oil

(Used to refer to CBD products on Amazon) A very general term that does not give any information on what is contained in the oil, and often is used on Amazon for a hempseed oil being marketed as a CBD oil (which it is not). Misleading to consumers.

Isolate

Has undergone maximal fractionization and processing to produce the singular molecule of CBD (99.9%). All other compounds found within the plant have been removed, including cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. May contain trace amounts of solvent residue.

Isolation

Removes all compounds except the CBD molecule through polar separation using Pentane.

Phytocannabinoids

Naturally occurring compounds produced by the Cannabis plant and several other plant species.

Terpenes

Organic aromatic compounds that are abundant in nature and create the characteristic flavor and aroma of numerous plants, including Cannabis.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

The psychotropic cannabinoid not currently legal in all 50 states.

Trichomes

Tiny little hairs on the plant that provide insulation.

Vertical Integration

Wherein the entire supply chain is owned or operated by the company allowing for greater quality control.

Winterization

Extraction process that separates and removes the lipids and the waxes.

Whole Plant Extract

Oil has been extracted using all the parts of the plant.
